The problem is that there is a ton of new games to be played this time of year, new games like King of Fighters XIII!

Simply put KOF XIII is AMAZING! So much better than the last turd of a KOF game SNK Playmore put out. The game has a wealth of modes, great graphics and animation and the sound track is pretty bad ass too, my copy of the game came with a 4 CD sound track containing not only KOF XIII's soundtrack but the best songs from all the previous games too.

The game play is also great, Drive Inputs allow the player to link two special moves together at the cost of half the "Drive" bar which is the green bar next to the big yellow "Special" meter. This also allows you to link Desperation Moves (KOF's "Super" move equivalent) to Super Desperation Moves. It does require perfect timing as you must do the move when the first move conects but if you can manage it you will do a ton of damage. The best thing about the game is that there is a decent tutorial mode that teaches the player most of the basics of the game which is great.

The only real problem I have with this game is that because this game requires such Procession when it comes to linking super moves together that the online code is not good enough unless you are playing someone that lives close to you. That said I have had a lot of fun playing this game locally with friends and will recommend this game to any fighting game fan.

next up we have GoodOldGame's release of Ultima 7 Complete which contains Ultima 7 part 1 and 2 with both of the expansions which amounts to a metric shit ton of gameplay let me tell you.

This game has a lot of really story telling and if even if you have not play the others it's worth checking this title out as it's considered to be one of the best old school cRPG's you can buy even if most of the fighting is automated and a lot of the quests are essentially long winded fetch quests.

Finally there is Cave Story HD + which is an enhanced version of the Wiiware title of an old PC indie game (a very good one I might add!) which was inspired by games like Metriod and Castlevania.

If you like challenging old school free roaming platforming adventure games with multiple endings then this is clearly the game for you. Besides this now gives you the change to give the creator money so that he can finally make a sequel to this game which is rumoured to be in the works. *Squeeeee!*

Guardian Heroes, Radiant Silvergun and NBA Jam all make there way on to XBLA!

An intense battle in a rebel village in Guardian Heroes

Well a bunch of really cool retro releases have finally trickled their way down to Xbox Live Arcade. The first being Radiant Silvergun which is a decent (if slightly over-rated) vertical shoot-em-up released by Treasure on the Sega Saturn. It's a little fussy as the game expects you to remember pressing different buttons together in certain combinations for different attacks. But if you call yourself a Sega fan you owe it to yourself to play this game because it's considered by many to be one of the best Saturn games ever made and you can now play it for £10 which is at least ten times less than what the original Sega Saturn version goes for on Ebay these days.

Then there was 'NBA Jam: On Fire' which I have always liked but I am not obsessed over unlike a few of my American friends. This is pretty much the same game you all know and love and with some minor tweaks. For those who don't know what NBA Jam is, it's a super over the top 2 vs 2 basketball game that barely resembles anything to do with the actual sport of basketball. Most of the rules have been stripped down and the main emphasis is on fun over realism so you can expect a lot of flashy dunks in this game. For 1200 Microsoft points it's a little expensive but for fans of old school arcade basketball games it's a very good deal, well better than paying for the full retail disc version anyway!

Then finally it's quite possibly one of my favourite video games of all time, Guardian Heroes which is another game made by Treasure for the Sega Saturn but this time it's a scrolling beat-em-up. This is, hands down the best scrolling beat-em-up ever made. It has great fighting mechanics that work a little like Fatal Fury's where you switch plans instead of moving up and down. This is great because with the plain switching thing it allows the game to play like a standard 2D fighting game like Steet Fighter 2 so you can block and do all kind of fancy moves and combo's with the D-Pad. Add a great and interesting multi-routed storyline and tons of enemy and stage variety as well as a great Vs mode and you have yourself a winner. Treasure did change a few things like Vs mode is now 12 players instead of 6 and some of the dialogue has been "re -translated" but it's nothing to get to worked up about. This is a cracking game and thanks to the Xbox's raw computing power you can play the game now with no slowdown and for 800 Microsoft Points to boot!

You can expect full reviews of these games at some point in the near future.

SEGA medadrive collection on sale on Steam.

You can check out the steam page HERE!

SEGA are currently having a big sale on their entire back catalogue on steam which would not normally warrant a mention on this blog although Alpha Protocol is totally worth picking up for £1.50 but that is besides the point.

The point is that Sega are selling a whole bunch of their Megadrive games on the cheap, for £5.49 in fact. Instead of going the usual route SEGA decided to put in a lot of lesser known titles in this collection.

In Shadow Dancer is often overlooked by both SEGA and Shinobi Fans

For a start THERE ARE NO SONIC GAMES IN THIS COLLECTION! Yes that's right the blue critter is nowhere to be seen. This is either a blessing or a curse depending on what side of the Sonic fan club you are on but for me I am personaly glad because it means some of SEGA's more obscure games gets to shine. Other notable causalities also include the Phantasy Star series, Streets of Rage 3 and the original Shinobi but I am guessing SEGA are just going to insert those in another collection down the line some when.

However we do get such great games like Shadow Dancer (Shinobi 2), Gunstar Heroes, Alien Solider and Wonderboy 3 as well as some lesser known games like SEGA's neat little rougelike Fatal Labyrinth and their obviously R-TYPE and Thunder Force inspired horizontal shoot-em-up Bio-Hazard Battle which you would never normally see on a collection such as this so I am glad it made this cut this time around.

Even if you own the SEGA Megadrive collection on other consoles this one is worth checking out just for some of the rarer titles as there is more to SEGA's back catalogue than the Sonic and Streets of Rage games...

Now is a pretty good time to be a retro gaming fan!

All of a sudden, RETRO VIDEO GAMES! No really! Over the past few weeks both good old games and xbox live arcade have been putting out some great retro game downloads.

GoG has been releasing a lot of EA's back catalogue recently. Aw common you know what I am talking about, games like Wing Commander and the Ultima series which coincidentally both have seen released on the retro PC gaming site over the past couple of weeks. In fact you can even check out Ultima 4 for free with no DRM, just a simple sign up to their service (which is a great service by the way!) and the game is yours for free, forever!

GoG seem to be releasing the games in their trillogies for $5.99 which is great as that means you get three games for the price of one. I highly recommend checking these games out if you have not already. The first three might be a little dated by I personaly found them enjoyable still after all of these years. Same goes for the Wing Commander 1 + 2 pack which is also $5.99

Ultima IV - You could be playing this right now instead of reading this!

Over on the Xbox 360 how ever we have both good news and bad news. The good news is we have a great port of Street Fighter 3: Thrid Strike which has the GGPO netcode. It's pretty rare for an Xbox Live Arcade title to have good netcode but this port of third strike has it. Not a huge fan of Capcom's DLC princg though. Charging for character colours and being able to play as the last boss in the game comes off as a little stingy espeically since the game was 1200 points.

There was a decent port of UMK3 but it was taken off Xbox Live Marketplace when Midway went under!

None of that matters though because compaired to the horrid Mortal Kombat Kollection that was also released on XBLA it's pretty much a godsend. The MKK has bad emulation issues (yes really in 2011 no less!) and the diffculty slider in MK2 is downright broken oh and the achivements are glitchy too and the netcode is worthless. If they bother to patch this I might recommend this as getting all three of the first MK games for 800 Microsoft Points is a good deal, shame that the games where ported over so badly.

Not all that much retro wise going on at Steam at the moment. Although they are releasing "best of" editon of Worms 3D which contains all of Worms 3D and Worms 4 content in to one package. Should be intresting to see what the modern audence would think of this game as it was not well recived by the diehard Worms fans when first released.

Daggerfall may not look like much but it's still one heck of a game with a large game world to boot!

In other news you can now download Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall for free and legaly too thanks to Bethesda. I am guessing they are doing this as a promotonal tool for their newest Eldar Scrolls game called Skyrim which should be out later this year or early next year at the latest. I found out about it thanks to this blog post by Bethesda themseleves. That blog post also gives the link to Eldar Scrolls Arena as well which is awesome because these games where not as loved. This is because it was the third game Eldar Scrolls Morrowind that made the series the big deal that it is today so it's nice to go back and see where both that and Oblivion (the fourth Eldar Scrolls game) came from.

CHASER REVIEW (PC 2001)

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; They tend to be super hard games because once you die you start over. This typically means that people who play these types of games try to get the highest score possible while trying to beat the game, it's a fun challenge.

Shiren the Wanderer was the first of Chun Soft's Mystery Dungeon games, it was also not bound to any licence of any kind so they could do as they please unlike like the Chocabo or Pokemon versions of the series. As a console Rougelike goes Shiren is one of the best, it's very well thought out and even when the player dies they can still effect the world around them allowing them to make progress which is a little different to most games of this type.

Dungeon Explorer is not a rouge like but in fact the sequel to an old TurboGfx 16 of the game name. This is not like gauntlet though, this time it's more like Daiblo or Dungeon Siege where you burst in to dungeons, kill everything then walk out with the loot. It's got online multiplayer and it's pretty fun for a game of this type which is handy because the DS does not have many games of this type.

You can expect reviews of these once I have played them more, Danny out!

Parodius Portable Reveiw for PSP

It appears that I have already written a review about the Pardious Portable PSP collection of games FIVE YEARS AGO in 2007! I hope you enjoy it!

Review Index

1) Game list

2) About Parodius

3) Product review

4) Chances of a western release

Not strictly retro but... Sports games these days are dry, dull affairs with complex and fussy controls and uninspiring gameplay. I remember what sports games used to be like, they where pretty fun. Gamevil obviously do too as Baseball Superstars 2011 is just like those age old arcade baseball games like SNK's Baseball Stars which is exactly what I want out of a 60p video game for my Android Mobile.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://corebusters.blogspot.com/2011/06/not-strictly-retro-but-baseball.html' title='Not strictly retro but... With that said I tried Phantasy Star Universe's add-on last year and in my opinion it was one of the worst follow up's to a much beloved online RPG that I have ever seen. It was way to grindy and everything about the game just felt uninspired I also did not like the poor item crafting system either. I was not the only one who disliked PSU as it seems that Sega have gone back to what made the Phantasy Star Online games so great, so much so in fact that Phantasy Star Zero is effectively being dubbed as the true squeal to Sega's awesome Dreamcast online RPG.

Room 101 - Golden Axe Beast Rider

*Please note that this review was taken from an old blog of mine. There are a few more "swears" in this review than any of my normal reviews because this game angered me a lot. Enjoy the review!*

I love the Golden Axe games but there has not been a good Golden Axe game since the second arcade game which was released in 1993 confusingly called Golden Axe 2 ~ The Return of Death Adder. This is a strange name because Sega released a game which was already called Golden Axe 2 on the Megadrive one year before. But like I said, this is neither here nore there because there have been no attempts to bring the series back to it's former glory which is a shame because the Golden Axe mythology is very interesting.

Irem Arcade Classics (PC) Review

Here are a couple of videos that cover my review of DotEmu's Irem Arcade Classics. I mean I put up with it because I enjoy the dungeon exploration and monster killing that this game presents.

The game is like you typical dungeon crawling RPG. You run around the dungeon collection treasure and getting in to fights while avioding the various traps that are littered around the dungeon.

The main hook is the character devlopement though. With every victorty you become stronger and ear more experiance you can level up your character's guild which acts like their character profession so to speak. You can learn multiple guilds but only have one active at any one time but you do keep the highest passive strengths of each of the guilds you level.

With that said time is at the essence as my character can die of old age. Every time I leave the dungeon or die my character becomes much older. At the moment I am playing as a dwarf so they can live up to 175 years old and he is currently 25 which is not to bad.

Anyway I off to go play some more now but if you want to check out the game please go vist the website where you can check out the demo.

Sega Rally Arcade Online Review

Sega Rally Online Arcade tries to invoke what are lofty memories of what some might consider (especially myself) to be one of the greatest Arcade racing games of all time while using fairly modern technology from Sega's 2007 update to the series Sega Rally Revo. I have just been really busy, either with work or studying for my NVQ level 3 Business Admin deploma which I have almost finished.

Good news is that I have this week off and my good buddy Richie sent me back my Pardious Collection for the PSP. This thing still costs a bomb on Ebay so I am glad to have it back. I may review it at some point.

Anyway in other retro related news I have been playing a game called Demise, an awesome Dungeon Crawler that is much like your typical Rougelike games like Angband or Nethack. It's a tough game but it has a lot of depth and can even be played online with a persitant world which is awesome.

Also Sega intend to realese Sega Rally Arcade this week so that should be fun to check out at least. The Sega Rally franchise has always been one of my favourate racing game series so I can not wait to check it out.

Stay tunned for more updates this week!

The Adventers of Honda II (Angband LP - Part 03)

As I awoke I found out that nothing has been stolen, this was a concern of mine after I was attacked by a rouge on the previous floor and while he teleported away I snuck in to his secret stash and stole what I would believe to be most of his worldly possessions. Perhaps he was trapped down here and did not know the way back up in to town? I can't have much sympathy for a guy who stabbed me and ran off with my coppers so I gathered my things and I started to wonder around the dungeon for a bit looking for more treasure or better equipment.

As I made my way up the northern corridor of the room I was staying I discovered that the passage up ahead was block by rubble which I was able to dig out with my hands relatively quickly and without out too much effort. VOOT even managed to surpass Sega's other smash hit fighting game Virtua Fighter 3 which was released the year before and was dominating the arcade scene in Japan at the time. While this game has seen released on other consoles the new Xbox 360 release seems to be the best release of the game thus far thanks to it's ability of online play, updated graphics and the controllers naturally have two sticks on them although not as big as the massive flight stick sticks of the arcade machine so some of the tactile feeling is lost.

The Adventers of Honda II (Angband LP - Part 02)

As I rested I got my bearings of my new surroundings. I have been really busy with real life stuff but you can bet when the bank holidays come I will be posting more and more on this blog. Some random thougts...

Mortal Kombat Armageddon was a pretty terrible game but had one of the most epic intro videos I have ever seen. Now that Mortal Kombat 9 is out next week and is a good game I wonder what the intro will be like? Would be funny if it reversed and it was terrible.

In the Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Togther why are necromancers so bloody annoying? I'll get right to the point, this remake of a classic game is missing the point. Oh don't get me wrong it's OK I suppose for a standard vehicle combat game. That's just it though because Battlezone on the PSP deserves to be more than just a standard run of the mill video game, or at least I think so anyway.

Atari has decided to make Battlezone an deathmatch arena style tank game complete with respawns and perks and weapon loadouts, the lot. And you would think this would be a good thing because at the end of the day Battlezone was all about tanks shooting other tanks and nothing more and that's true but Atari have managed to screw the pooch on this one something chronic.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://corebusters.blogspot.com/2011/04/battlezone-psp-aka-how-to-totaly-miss.html' title='Battlezone PSP A.K.A. Yes it's graphics where minimal to put it kindly and the sound downright dreadful at times but the one thing that sold most Atrai customers on a hot new product was it's box. Just as well the people who published games on the Atrai 2600 knew about this and came up with some truly brilliant pieces of art to accompany their games because otherwise just looking at the Atrai's basic representation of what is supposed to be going on might leave the customer wondering what the hell is going on.

Rebellion Games sale over at GOG.com

If you have not checked out the wonderful Empire Earth Gold then do so right now!

Hey gang just wanted to let you guys know of a sweet deal that is for this weekend only and no I am not being paid to write this, this is pure produce belief baby!

Anyway check out GoodOldGames, they sell awesome PC retro games that have been tooled up to run on modern machines which is great. I mean I had no idea that Atrai made an almost Armored Core style remake of the classic wireframe shooter Battlefield but they did and they released it for the PSP!

I have only played this game for a little while but so far it seems pretty good but not mindblowing. The game resembes Combat more than Battlezone now that it's based around internation arena combat with tanks rather than engaging in a war agasint an whole army of tanks. Like in some kind of crazy mech game you can tweak and upgrade your tank to your hears content with a whole bunch of diffrent parts and upgrades which is neat I guess. Anyway in case you are wondering I have supplied below what the old arcade game and this PSP remake look like so you can see the differance.

This is the old arcade game!

This is the PSP remake!

I Will cover this game in more detail once I get around to playing more of it!

They don't make 'em like this any more!

Back when people actually took care and bothered to make original art for their front covers. Back when a front cover would convey more about what was going on about a video game than the actual in game graphics and sound, they made covers like this.

This is the cover for Demon Attack, an Atrai 2600 game. Box art for video games was such much cooler back then. I mean just look at that art. Is that not the most trippy yet awesome thing you have ever seen on the cover of anything ever? Like most retro gaming blogs it seems I am compelled to write about this early video gaming phenomenon so stay tuned for more retro box art goodness!

Goodbye Honda: LVL 18 Ranger

Angband may not look like much but it has more depth and tension than any big budget RPG you care to mention!

Goodbye Honda, you where the finest Half-Eleven Ranger that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. It's not your fault, it was me. I should of released that you where not capable of taking on those two high level mages at once despite your incredible skill with a crossbow and you luck at finding really bizarre potions. (seriously who would make a potion of DEATH anyway!?)

Angband is a super hardcore turn based dungeon crawler, a "rougelike" where if you die then YOU ARE DEAD! No seconds chances and no re-do's. I have been playing with my Honda character for around a month and half on and off and got pretty far with him, the furthest I have ever gotten in Angband actually thanks to some cleaver warping back in to town when "shit go real!" So yeah I am kind of bummed out today.

The one thing I love about rougelikes is that every battle won is a victory over death and I feel fantastic but one small fuck up and it's game over and it can be pretty disheartening at times especially when it's my fault like it was today. I mean I could of warped out or used some high level magic but I got careless and my good friend Honda ended up paying the ultimate price, a shame indeed!

Death Tank HD Reveiw for Xbox 360

1 - 8 Players Over Xbox Live

1 - 4 Players Local

1200 Microsoft points

Death Tank is not a name that will be familiar to many people. Anyway the game is a remake of a classic PS1 Strategy Role Playing Game which is highly regaurded by RPG fans. (or SRPG for short) Anyway it's a great game but I have noticed something, it's price has dropped like a rock within the last week. If you go in to your local GAME store here in the UK you can pick up the speical edition for £16 while if you check out the online store you can buy the standard edition for £12!

This is a great deal as this is easly one of the best RPG's on the PSP and happens to be a really good remake that takes in to account all the failings of the first release without completely changing everything to the point where it's no longer the game you may of enjoyed on the PS1. I highly recommend checking this game out before it goes out of print and becomes hard to find.

Gradius Collection for PSP

Games in this collection: Gradius 1, 2, 3, Gaiden, 4

The Gradius Collection is a fantastic collection of some of the most influential and fascinating horizontal scrolling shoot-em-up's made by Konami who where considered to be arcade giants during the eighties and early nineties. In particular the retro gaming collection I have been playing the most is Gradius Collection which is a fantastic collection of some of the greatest horizontal shoot-em-up's (or Shumps as some people like to call 'em!) ever created. If you are willing to wait it out you can pick up a copy for less than £10 but you do have to wait, it took me a month or two before I finally got my copy at a reasonable price.

Anyway the whole point of this post is for me to say don't be to surprised to see me review this awesome compollation of games soon.

CORE BUSTERS IS CREATED!

Hello Retro Gaming Enthusiasts!

Today I have decided to create this website to celebrate everything that is Retro Gaming and will be focusing on many aspects of our video gaming hobby.

I hope you guys will stick around and check out this blog every once in awhile.
